CHALLENGES
1. Update the backyard.
2. Increase privacy.
3. Design a focal point.
4. Carefully coordinate color to increase cohesiveness of design.
5. Update the design of the front to have a rich, old world feel.

SOLUTION
As a corner house, there were many views to screen from both the patio space and the lower pool deck. An outdoor room concept was created on the upper patio and access off of the driveway was moved so that views of the backyard were hidden from the driveway. The upper patio gained purpose with the outdoor fireplace as a main focal feature. The roof-like pergola structure that was added gave a more enclosed intimate feel and became a unique architectural element. The existing patio pavers were worn and thus removed in favor of bluestone. The exact color red of the annuals in the planters and flower boxes were carefully selected not to clash with other plants like the Knockout roses and not to clash with the cushions on the furniture. The planting around the house was highly repetitious using hundreds of arborvitaes for the backdrop screening and a several varieties hydrangeas. The result is a striking statement and a heightened sense of cohesive design.

A secondary project, completed at a later date, pulled the elegance of the back into the front yard. The large horseshoe drive brick was replaced with historic antique street pavers. The update lends a richness of unmatched color and the irregularity in each individual brick gives a very old world feel to the home.
